Orford (pop ~500) is a holiday resort town at the estuary of the Prosser River. Good weather, scuba diving and fishing are abundant. Boats can be chartered for sea fishing expeditions.

It is possible to reach Maria Island via a ferry which departs from Orford four times daily. Raspins Beach, Shelley Beach and Spring Beach offer walks and safe swimming. Sandstone from this area was quarried for use in buildings in Hobart and Melbourne. There are also walks along Rheban Beach (collect shells) and Prosser River (convict trail).

To the southwest of Orford is Buckland, where the spectacular Church of St. John the Baptist, with its fourteenth century stained glass window, is located. South of the town is Thumbs Lookout, a picnic area affording good views of Maria Island. Further south is the Wielangata Forest Drive, where there is a boardwalk through an ancient section of rainforest. The Sandspit Forest Reserve is also in the area.

Orford has three 4-star and two 3½-star accommodation facilities (RACT rated). It is approximately 1:15 drive from Hobart.
