Clarence , a city on the eastern shore of the Derwent River, is a part of the Greater Hobart area. Hobart Airport is located on the eastern shore at Cambridge.

Bellerive , located on Kangaroo Bluff, began life as a fort, constructed in the 1870's when it was feared the Crimean War would lead to a Russian invasion of Hobart. The fort was selected to overlook the Derwent River, and that criterion makes the place an excellent location to view the river and Mt. Wellington. Bellerive Oval is the location for international cricket matches held in Tasmania.

Higher up the Derwent River is Risdon Cove , the original site selected for European settlement in the south. There are three vineyards - Crosswinds, Orani, and Palmara - on the eastern shore.

Bridgewater is one of three main spots below the Derwent headwaters where cars cross the river. The Baskerville Raceway (motor racing) is located at Bridgewater. At nearby Brighton is the Bonorong Wildlife Park, featuring wombats, koalas, Tasmanian devils, and kangaroos.

South of the Clarence-Bellerive area are some of the region's best beaches, including the Seven Mile Beach Protected Area, covering 127 ha. Good surf beaches are at South Arm and Clifton Beach, some distance from the city.
